School Uniform

School Uniform

The Department for Education strongly encourages schools to have a school uniform. This page sets out the school’s policy and approach on uniform and confirms the school’s commitment to providing value for money to parents and ensuring that no pupils is discriminated against due to their gender, disability, religion or belief, economic circumstances or social and cultural background.

The uniform code has been designed to give pupils a sense of togetherness and team spirit so that they can feel proud to be part of the school. There are also health and safety requirements that mean our uniform represents a safe set of clothing and footwear for busy active learners whilst ensuring that our pupils are visible and identifiable in the community – this is especially important when we are out on school trips.

This policy follows the DfE statutory guidance, ‘Cost of school uniforms’, published November 2021 and takes account of the non-statutory guidance, ‘School uniforms’, published June 2023.

Our Local Governing Committee expect pupils to wear school uniform for the following reasons:

  • it fosters a sense of identity and belonging to a school community
  • it promotes a sense of pride in the school, in line with our ethos and values
  • it supports positive behaviour and discipline
  • it is practical, comfortable and appropriate for activities in school
  • it is affordable
  • it helps pupils to feel equal and encourages cohesion
  • it has been designed with health and safety in mind

Pre-Loved Uniform

The school operates a uniform ‘swap shop’ which families are encouraged to use. Parents and carers can bring a piece of uniform that their child has outgrown and swap it for another piece of more suitable uniform. If there is no uniform to swap, a small donation can be offered instead. These ‘swap shops’ take place every month.

Jewellery & Pierced Ears

For health and safety reasons, we do not allow children to wear jewellery in school (this includes earrings).  Children should only wear watches once they are able to tell the time and this should be an inexpensive analogue watch. Smart watches that connect to the internet or can send/receive messages or photos are strictly prohibited. Watches should be removed for PE lessons.

If you wish to have your child’s ears pierced, we ask that you do so at the start of the summer holidays to ensure that by the start of the autumn term there is no need for earrings to be worn. Please avoid any discomfort for your child by sticking to this timetable as we do not allow earrings in school at any time.

Hair Styles

We expect children to avoid extremes of fashion in uniform and appearance, particularly with regard to hairstyle. For example coloured hair and extremely short cut or shaven heads (including lines shaved in) are not acceptable (guidance: hair cut with clippers on a setting lower than a 2 is too short).

All long hair must be tied back at all times. No oversized or brightly coloured hair accessories are allowed. Please stick to our school colours for hair ties/bobbles/slides.

Footwear

It is strongly recommended that all pupils wear ‘sensible’ closed-toed, hard-soled all black plain school shoes with a flat sole for school. Footwear with flashing lights are not appropriate for school. Boots are not allowed. Open-toed sandals should not be worn, even in the Summer Term. In the case of extreme weather children can wear boots to school but must change into a pair of shoes on arrival to school.

We do not encourage children to wear trainers everyday as they do not always provide adequate protection or support.  Trainers or plimsolls must be worn for PE. An example of acceptable footwear can be viewed via this link.
